Knowing More about UK VAT

Goods and services tax (GST) or value added tax (VAT) is charged on value added to product. It is generally, perceived to be of fair value as it corresponds to the number of passages between transition of product from manufacturer to consumer. Compared to sales tax, the amount levied is based on the total value at each stage (which results in a much higher amount). Vat is imposed in many countries including UK. UK vat is considered a form of indirect levy, as it is collected from a person that does not bear the whole cost of tax. The introduction of this levy was due to high sales tax, which encouraged business dishonesty.

Vat is charged on most goods and services, including those provided in UK and imported from European Union or outside those boundaries. The charges are effective when a vat-registered business sells to a customer (business or non-business). This value is reclaimed when businesses buy other goods and services. UK vat rate can be divided into three types; standard rate (17.5 percent), reduced rate (5 percent), and zero rate (0 percent). Certain goods are also exempted from tax while others do not fall into taxation at all. For products liable for tax, the tax value has already been added to the sale price of most goods and services.

You are required to register for UK vat business if your turnover for the past 12 months exceeded a threshold or limit (currently 68,000 GBP) or you assume that you will soon exceed this amount.
